Art Exhibition: “Transitions”
January 9 - January 18
Born in Liverpool in 1959, Mary Mitchell qualified in medicine in Southampton in 1983 and following training in general practice and paediatrics, developed an interest in child development to become a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist in 1999. By tearing up magazines and catalogues Mary constructs vibrant images on a grand scale which lie between an abstract and representative style. The reconstruction of pages of typeface and coloured advertisements is a response to meaning and memory in a world of learning and consumerism to create art which juxtaposes elaborate organisation alongside chaos and decay. ‘For me, my art is therapeutic, the tearing of paper feels like a very satisfying expression of my frayed nerves and the pasting of layers of torn paper seems soothing’. The image is a result of the dialogue between this state of mind, my professional learning and the image itself and emerges as the work progresses, often resulting in something very different to what was originally intended. Sometimes a face will emerge in the image but not always.”Transitions”.
There will be a ‘Meet The Artist‘ event on Thursday 17th January @ 2-4pm
